First Blog: The Power of Love in Everything We Do

February 24, 2025

For years, people have encouraged me to start a blog—sharing my thoughts on youth development, leadership, and life lessons. At first, I wasn’t too excited about the idea. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized I have nearly 24 years’ worth of wisdom through Be Someone that might benefit others. So here I am, finally putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard).

I’ll keep my posts short and to the point, and I’d love to hear from you—your feedback, ideas, and even suggestions for topics.

As I reflect on 2024, one event stands out: our annual Christmas Giveaway Saturday at Be Someone’s headquarters in Stone Mountain. Every year, we invite the community to stop by our training facility and receive a free gift. Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, we had plenty of surprises for our young visitors.

But the real gift that day wasn’t in the presents—it was in the smiles. Seeing the joy on those children’s faces filled my heart in a way no material item ever could. The gifts weren’t expensive, but to those kids, they were priceless. And if you ask me who gained the most from that day—them or me? No contest: Me, Orrin “Checkmate” Hudson!

One of the core lessons I teach through chess is this: Be a giver, not a taker. A giving heart defines a person. It builds character, kindness, and responsibility. Givers lift others up. Givers make the right moves—not just on the chessboard, but in life.

I’ve seen the proof firsthand. I hear it from parents, teachers, and community leaders who tell me how Be Someone graduates are making a difference. And that fuels me to keep going.

Now, here we are—already three months into 2025. I challenge you to give of yourself this year. Find a young person you can mentor, encourage, or simply inspire. Be the voice of confidence, the hand of guidance, the smile that makes a difference.

You have the power to change a life.
And I promise you, the rewards will be greater than you ever imagined.

Wishing you a belated but heartfelt… Happy New Year!
