Every Move Matters: How We Teach Young People to Think Before They Act

Why “Pants Up, Head Up, Grades Up, Never Give Up” Is More Than a Motto—it’s a Life Strategy

At Be Someone, Inc., we don’t just teach chess.
We teach thinking.

For more than two decades, I’ve worked with young people who were never taught how to slow down, think things through, or consider the consequences of their actions. Many of them are bright. Many are talented. But too many are making one bad move that costs them years—or even their lives.
That’s why our message is simple, direct, and intentional.

Pants Up. Head Up. Grades Up. Never Give Up.
When I say this to students, I’m not talking about fashion.
I’m talking about discipline, self-respect, and responsibility.

  • Pants up means respect yourself and the space you’re in.
  • Head up means believe in yourself and see beyond your current situation.
  • Grades up means education is still the fastest way out of poverty and prison.
  • Never give up means your past does not get to decide your future.

These aren’t slogans.
They are standards for living.

Think It Out. Don’t Shoot It Out. Brains Before Bullets.
Every time I say this, I’m trying to interrupt a moment that could become permanent.
Too many young people react instead of reflect.
Too many decisions are made in seconds that carry lifelong consequences. That’s why we use chess. On a chessboard, every move matters.
There is no reset button.
No excuses.
No blaming the board. If you make a careless move, you pay for it. Life works the same way.

Why We Use the Chessboard
Chess teaches what lectures can’t.
It teaches:

  • Cause and effect
  • Delayed gratification
  • Accountability
  • Strategic thinking
  • Patience under pressure

When a student loses a piece on the board, we don’t yell—we ask questions:

  • What were you thinking?
  • What did you miss?
  • What would you do differently next time?

Those same questions apply in real life.

Why I Share Police Reports and Real Stories
As a former state trooper, I’ve seen the end results of poor decisions.
I’ve read police reports where one impulsive act destroyed:

  •  a young person’s future
  • a family’s peace
  • an entire community’s sense of safety

I share these stories not to shame—but to teach.
They show what happens when young people are never taught how to:

  • pause
  • think
  • evaluate consequences
  • choose a better move

Our program exists so those stories don’t repeat themselves.

Designed to Create Thinkers, Not Reactors
Everything we do at Be Someone is intentional.
We design our programs so students become:

  • Thinkers, not followers
  • Achievers, not excuses
  • Givers, not takers
  • Leaders, not liabilities

We want them to understand that:

  • every choice has a cost
  • every move has a consequence
  • every pawn has the potential to become a queen

But only if they’re willing to think ahead.

Why This Work Matters
Be Someone isn’t a trend.
It’s a movement.
We’ve done this work before.
We’re doing it now.
And we must continue doing it—because the stakes are too high to stop. This blog is a reminder of who we are, what we stand for, and why our work creates life-long winners, not just short-term success stories. Because at the end of the day…

Every move matters.
Brains beat bullets.
And when a young person learns to think, they learn to win
