BE SOMEONE TO TEACH CHILDREN TO MAKE THE RIGHT MOVE AT STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP CHESS CAMP
Designed for Children ages 6- through 22-years-old, Participants Will Learn Decision Making Skills Through the Game of Chess
ATLANTA – July, 2009 – Be Someone, an Atlanta-based non-profit crime prevention program with national reach, is bringing a unique day camp experience to metro Atlanta youth. The organization’s Strategic Leadership Camp is designed to empower young people to take charge of their lives and make every move count. The camp costs $197 and will be held July 20-24at Arabia Mountain High School. Early drop-off and late pickup are available.
“Attending summer camp is a great way for parents to ensure their children use the summer to continue learning during a break from school. This camp will teach children courage, self-esteem and the skills needed to make the many difficult decisions that face them in life,” said Hudson. “Through chess, I’m able to teach children to push pawns instead of drugs and help them make the moves that will improve their future.”
Orrin “Checkmate” Hudson, founder of Be Someone, is on a cross-country mission to help at-risk youth make better life decisions using a very unusual tool: a chessboard. In 2001, Hudson learned of an incident in which seven Wendy’s employees were shot, five of whom died – for a mere $2,400. It was this tragic incident that inspired Hudson to quit his job and use his life savings to found Be Someone, a not-for-profit organization designed to raise self-esteem while teaching responsibility and analytical thinking skills to at-risk children.
Now, Hudson travels the country mentoring children to value KASH – Knowledge, Attitude, Skills and Habits – over cash. Since its founding in 2001, Be Someone has touched the lives of over 20,000 students across the country and has had amazing success with increasing grade point averages, classroom participation and attendance through the mantra ‘Heads up, pants up, grades up and never give up.’
Hudson hopes the success of Be Someone will inspire others to volunteer their time and money to this important cause. "When good people fail to act, evil prevails," said Hudson. "Investing in the youth of today is one of the best ways I’ve found to ensure a better tomorrow."
By 2015, Be Someone hopes to have made a difference in close to one million students’ lives. If you are interested in donating, volunteering or learning more about Be Someone, please visit www.besomeone.org.

Hudson retired from competitive chess 10-years ago in order to found Be Someone, a non-profit crime prevention program that uses chess to teach children analytical thinking skills.
“I’ve devoted the last 10 years of my life to teaching children to push pawns, not drugs,” said Hudson. “With the support of Brenda and Bill Goichberg from the Continental Chess Association, I’ve decided to get in the game and once again compete in the World Open.”
The World Open brings together champions from across the globe to compete for $250,000 in prize money. Players compete in nine sections based on their current rating. Hudson, whose rating is 1690, will be competing in the under 1800 section.
Hudson turned his focus from competitive chess to using the game as an educational tool after he learned of an incident in which seven Wendy’s employees were shot, five of whom died – for a mere $2,400. It was this tragic incident that inspired Hudson to quit his job and use his life savings to found Be Someone, a not-for-profit organization designed to raise self-esteem while teaching responsibility and analytical thinking skills to at-risk children.
